Question...

Christian religion has Satan, Lucifer, Prince of Darkness etc etc as the embodiment of evil and the prime adversary of God.

Is there are a similar character in the Indian religion / myth ?

Would love to know the answer. If there are any informed people reading this, please drop a comment. Thanks.

Shiva - the destroyer
Kali - the goddess of death
Yama - the god of death

The cyclical view of creation-and-destruction/good-and-evil etc. raises the "destroyers" to the pedestal of god...and thus there is no Satan-equivalent in Hinduism as far as I know.

ok..thats interesting. so there is no one who is fixed as an evil incaranate. Evil is more like a fluid concept in Hinduism, which is a better reflection of human societies.

Of course there are the hordes of Asurs and Rakshasas...but even there, Shiva is god of rakshasas.

Yeah, there isn't a hierarchy because of cyclical causality of morality, but Rahu is the closest you'll get to a real bad-ass in Hinduism. And besides, Hinduism has no devilish tendency (Tamas) with enough power to face the Truth (Sattva), personified by God. (Bhagavad-gita 7.15, 11.36, 16.18)

You are a real d*** if you assume that factoid wasn't already a part of my extensive scholarship, but you are also right :)

as far as I know there is no good-evil duality in Hindu myth. Even ravana had his virtues. Indra is often a wimpy dickhead (literally). Many such examples exist.
Like Ayan points out...the all powerful God in hindu myth also include the destructive force.

Great na...this lack of simple good-evil!!!

Yeah, I too think that Hinduism in its most general variety believes that everything is one...advaita...good and evil are manifestation of the same thing...But this might seem as escapism or rationalization to those believing in an eternal fight between the good and the evil.
